Species profile

Cubaris sp "Electric Blue"

Small, fast-moving and remarkably eye-catching, Cubaris sp “Electric Blue” is an undescribed Chinese isopod with colouration that changes dramatically under different lighting. The centre of the body appears dark slate-grey to blue, gradually becoming paler towards the outer edges, while subtle yellow markings run along the spine like flashes of lightning. Combined with its speed and shifting metallic-blue tones, these markings make “Electric Blue” a particularly fitting hobby name. Its formal taxonomic identity remains unresolved, and it is variously traded as Cubaris, Spherillo, Nesodillo or more generally as an unidentified member of the family Armadillidae.

The name “Electric Blue” refers to more than its speed: the yellow flashes running down its darker blue-grey back resemble tiny streaks of lightning, while its apparent colour can shift from metallic grey to blue as the lighting changes
